Day #6

Sunday 17 August

Cuba are officially welcomed into the World Community.

The Assembly votes to amend General Norm 21a (number of terms someone can serve on the World Ex-Co).

Delegates gather in national costume for Mass with Fr Adolfo Nicolas, Superior General of the Society of Jesus. Many visitors come from Europe and around the world to join them.

A reporter from Portuguese Radio is there behind the scenes to interview the delegates and visitors.

Mass is a simple and joyful celebration.

Reflecting on the story of the Canaanite woman, Fr Adolfo challenges us to see beyond cultural barriers and like Jesus be prepared to change. “We must continue to listen – the Spirit works where we least expect it.”

After Mass the celebration continues. Traditional Portuguese folk dancers provide the entertainment.

Fr Adolfo meets some of the host team from CLC Portugal and their families.

Visitors from CLC in Japan welcome guests to a traditional tea ceremony.

Later, the community gathers for prayer at the sanctuary of Fatima.

Fr Adolfo reminds us of Ignatius´s prayer to Mary to “put him with her Son”. In Mary´s response at the wedding feast of Cana we find our answer. “Whatever, Jesus tells you to do, do it.”
